Cricket bowling workload: how to track it without overcomplicating it

If there is one number in schoolboy cricket worth watching, it is how much a fast bowler bowls — and how fast that amount changes. Bowling workload is the clearest injury-risk signal in the sport, and the most commonly mismanaged. Here is how to track it without needing a lab.

Why bowling is different

Fast bowling loads the lower back through repeated, high-force extension and rotation. Lumbar stress injuries — especially in teenagers still growing — are the classic overuse problem, and they build quietly over weeks of accumulated overload, not in one bad spell. That makes bowling one of the few loads where honest counting genuinely helps prevent injury.

Count the right thing

Total balls bowled matters, but the ratio matters more. Risk climbs when a bowler's recent workload spikes above what their body is conditioned for — the acute-to-chronic workload ratio. In plain terms:

  • Acute load — roughly this week's bowling.
  • Chronic load — the rolling average of the last few weeks: what they are conditioned for.
  • The spike — when this week jumps well above that average. That jump, not the raw total, is where injuries cluster.

A bowler stepping from a quiet exam term straight into a festival week of long spells is the textbook danger — not because the total is huge, but because the jump is.

Practical guardrails

  • Log balls bowled every session — nets count, not just matches. Most hidden load lives in training.
  • Watch the week-on-week jump, not the single-day total. A sudden doubling is the red flag.
  • Respect the age guidelines on overs and rest days for junior quicks. They exist because the growing spine is the weak link.
  • Pair the count with how the bowler feels. Climbing load plus rising back stiffness is a conversation to have now, not next week.

The point is not the number

It is the decision the number makes easier. Counting workload turns “he seems fine” into “he is up forty percent on his month and flagged a stiff back — he sits the second innings.” No model predicts the stress fracture. Watching the load just means you make that call a week before the injury makes it for you.
